Do you love this holiday or what? Coinciding with Halloween—our favorite time of the year by the way—the Day of the Dead is a primarily Mexican holiday. It is celebrated with family gatherings, festivals and observances for those who have died.

Called Día de Muertos in Spanish, it is honored all over the world. Some of the symbols surrounding it include brightly decorated skulls, known as sugar skulls, and alters that are adorned in a way to celebrate those who have passed. People often visit and decorate the graves of loved ones as well. They will also leave gifts and previous possessions of those who have passed.

History of Día de Muertos

Many believe that the souls of their dearly departed come and join the festivities during this time of the year. The date of October 31st, which is also known as All Hallow’s Eve, is thought to be the time of year when the veil that separates the living and the dead is the thinnest. The Day of the Dead is often celebrated this day, as well as on November 1st and 2nd.

The reason people dress up this time of the year, is actually so they blend in with the wandering spirits. It is an “if you can’t beat them, join them” concept.
